About me
Doing the right thing for nature
The idea that you could accept the landscape as it is, or take positive steps to influence nature, had been playing on my mind for some time. How could a market gardener like me do their bit? The answer was obvious: with flowers! There were plenty of wildflower borders along Texel’s fields, but I wanted more. A meadow sown only with native flowers. One that nurtures nature and captures the hearts of Texel residents and tourists. But as nothing in life is free (not even a meadow), I decided to put up square metres of Texel for adoption! This all became reality when I discovered a lovely plot at the foot of the dunes. Cycle past and enjoy our gorgeous wildflower meadow for yourself.
This is the man behind Bloemrijk Texel. Meet Vincent Lap
‘I’m a young, Texel-grown market gardener, and I love where I’m from. After a fantastic childhood on Texel, I headed to the mainland to study agriculture. The knowledge I gained of cultivation, fertilisers, accounting, management and much more gave me a broad understanding of running an agricultural business. As I believe the future of agriculture will be a form of intensive farming that respects nature, I went to work at organic farmers in North Holland and Israel.
That planted an idea to produce and sell my own products – preferably locally. I started out selling vegetable bags, but that proved too difficult. Now, thanks to the wildflower meadow, I’m able to give back to nature in another way. I hope it’ll be a blooming success! The proceeds from adoptions will fund my work to cultivate other native seeds, such as the common poppy. One day, I hope our family-run tulip and daffodil farm will be able to transition to natural farming.’
My goals
Wildflower meadow
Sow more plots on Texel, increase adoptions and share my knowledge of floriculture.
Food for the European dark bee
The European dark bee has called Texel home for 100 years, and we don’t want to say goodbye! That’s why we sow flowers that European dark bees and similar species love.
Texel’s pick-your-own garden
As flower lovers, we understand why pick-your-own gardens are so popular. There’s nothing quite like it! That’s why we’re thinking of planting a large pick-your-own garden next to the meadow.
Intensive agriculture
The wildflower meadow provides an extra source of income for us to cultivate other seeds and make our nursery, Tuinderij Texel, more organic.
It just feels right
Nature gives us so much, it deserves every bit of our attention and respect in return. The wildflower meadow is a great way to put that idea into practice.

Sustainable pioneer
As a keen backer of sustainable initiatives, North Holland’s provincial government has set up the ‘Green Capital’ programme to support and connect nature or landscape conservation projects in the region. After pitching his idea to the government during the ‘Sustainable Pioneers’ competition, part of Green Capital, Vincent Lap emerged as the favourite and secured funding as well as expert advice to develop his plan. ‘I’m delighted with the support. The brainstorming sessions with experts are particularly helpful. They really drill down and help me to figure out how I can attract more people and improve the educational side of things. It’s fantastic to exchange ideas with them.’
